My name is Justin (Quoc Bao), and I'm from Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. I arrived in Perth on June 2017. When I arrived it was a pity that I forgot to visit StudyPerth Airport Welcome Desk, as I missed out on the welcome pack that all international students receive that get them started on their journey in Perth. I'm completing my third year towards a Bachelor of Commence degree at Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup campus and looking to pursue a career in Marketing. As part of my degree, I’m completing my Work Integrated Learning program as a Marketing Intern at StudyPerth and writing this post to share my experience with you.

Let's talk about my story and how I got to where I am now. First off, why Perth? I chose Perth for several reasons: one of the top 10 most liveable cities in the world, the sunniest city in Australia (as a brochure told me), its Mediterranean climate with cool winters and mild summers. Perth has high teaching quality and living standards, affordable tuition fees and living costs compared to other states, and is a very diverse city with people from all over the world. Not to mention Perth is only one hour ahead of Viet Nam, which makes it easy to communicate with families and friends.

Second, why ECU? I've done some research and found out that ECU has high ratings for teaching quality and student satisfaction. It offers state-of-the-art facilities with qualified and experienced lecturers from different backgrounds. But I didn't start right away in ECU though, I went to Edith Cowan College (ECC) for one year before moving on to ECU. It's called a Pathway Program to ECU, where you have 3 trimesters (instead of 2 like most universities) to take on 8 units and complete a diploma before heading to year 2. This is where I decided to choose my major - Marketing. In general, this is an exciting field in the business world where you promote your brand (can be a company, a product or service) to the world.

I've been in Perth for over 2 years now and I’ve learned and grown myself a lot since I got here through the skills, knowledge and experiences that I wouldn’t have gained in my home country. For me, every step in the process is a new experience: first flight, first time in a new country, first winter ever, first time living independently and first time being totally in control and responsible for my life. I taught myself to find accommodation, cook, organise and discipline myself, build strong connections with others, and step out of my comfort zone. A different lifestyle it is, but I love the environment and the people here.

So, if you're considering studying abroad, give Perth a try and see what it has to offer. Consider this website to be your information hub and subscribe to StudyPerth student newsletters so you don't miss out on what's happening in Perth. In the future, I'll be writing some blog posts for StudyPerth website, so keep your eyes peeled for my next article.
