As the body representing the international education sector in Western Australia, StudyPerth has no hesitation in taking a public stand against racism in all its forms.
Western Australia is a safe and welcoming place for international students to live and learn. Recent incidents of discrimination and vilification within our community are motivated by the ignorance and xenophobia of a very small number of Western Australians. While such incidents are rare, they are despicable and will not be tolerated.
The International Education sector of Western Australia is united in its condemnation of racism. We are also united in our support of the Chinese community in Western Australia and their family and friends in China and around the world, who have been affected by the Novel Coronavirus outbreak.
The Premier has been unequivocal in his condemnation of racist behaviour, calling it ‘disgraceful and un-Australian’.
StudyPerth supports the Premier’s call to action: ‘Now is the time for us to rally behind the communities that are feeling the effects of this outbreak and extend a helping hand. Our job is to make our international guests feel welcome and part of our community.’
Quotes attributable to Phil Payne, Chief Executive Officer, StudyPerth
‘I feel particularly for the thousands of Chinese students who have been prevented from commencing or resuming their studies in Western Australia. I look forward to an early resolution of this outbreak, and a lifting of the travel restrictions, so we can welcome these students with open arms into the Western Australian community.’
‘All Chinese people affected directly or indirectly by the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, in China and elsewhere, are in our thoughts.’
